Hello and happy Easter everyone! So I was wondering if someone could please tell me what all would cause my outboard to pop in and out of gear? I have the shift Linkage adjusted in accordance with the manual, but it keeps popping out of gear and sounds like a skip when under full throttle. Also I have replaced all of the lower unit seals and I am still getting water in my lower end oil. All seals are good and no cracks in the body of the lower end. Thanks and hope to hear back soon.

Did you replace the shift rod o-ring ??------When you installed the lower unit did you line up the notch in the shift rod with the hole in the brass connecter.----You have do that before the bolt goes in.

Strange that it is leaking and jumping out of gear when it was all " put back together properly "-----Maybe the propeller is no good.

Don't know a crap load about them but I doubt you replaced every single seal. And removing your lower unit if not set in forward before can mess up your gear sequence Screenshot_2020-04-12-23-14-40.jpg

No ----On these motor is does not matter if forward / nuetral / reverse.------The linkages and room to work determine this.----On re-assembly it will all be correct again !

Id agree with racerone you've put it together wrong. Does the prop move a lot when you shift the gears?
Also if you're leaking after changing all the seals you need to check your shiftrod bushing, it's a bitch to get out but let me know if you're doing it I can provide a way of doing it that works without special tools

edit: when you take it apart please take a picture of your clutch dog cradle, it's the halfmoon shaped piece that slots into your shift assembly. I had a case where the piece had corroded to a point where it would slip out and dislodge the clutchdog on one side which caused the symptoms you're describing. I fixed that by milling/drilling the slot slightly deeper and then nipping the holding arms a bit tighter together for a good grip. It worked like a charm!

Garren, how did you get to that shift rod o-ring? They are not simple to change for most folks. Second question, when did it start popping out of gear and how long was it stored and/ or used with water contamination in the lower unit? Certain factors need to be considered. There are detents to hold it into gear, forward almost always fails first. You can be certain that the popping out of gear is rounding off parts that are expensive, like the forward gear and the shifter sleeve. Denny has included a picture. The parts for consideration are #12 and #15.

Price of the new gears will shock you.-----Shift rod bushing is easy to pull out with 1/4 threaded rod and a nut with hex rounded off it.
