I have a 79 evinrude which recently overheated. I got it running after it cooled down but it will not stay running at about half throttle or less. I was running perfectly prior to that. No discoloration of head however I did get steam and it stalled coming to my boat landing. Changed plugs with new still the same. Can anyone point me in the right direction?? Thanks to anyone who might be able to help.
ps a compression test showed over 75 on both cylinders.

How high over 75? I think that a lack of compression may be leading to your problem. 75 is pretty low...sorry

It was only a few pounds over.

It was only a few pounds over. You are right about the it being low. I read some other posts on overheating and one stated three phases of overheating and mentioned retorqueing the head. I did retorque it and runs fine again. Compression went from 75 to 125. While doing this I took the thermostat housing off and found I need a new thermostat. Also I am going to replace the impeller.. My lower end fluid is milky only after 6 or 7 hours in the water. Does anyone know whether I should try replacing the prop shaft seals first and if that doesn't cut it put a water pump seal kit in?
