"I have a 79 model 70 hp with the 2 carb 3 cyl. system. It came on a boat that I bought and the guy said something was wrong, so I tore the motor down to where I can see into the cyl walls and the middle piston is shot, the rings are busted and the piston has cracked edges. my question is this motor worth rebuilding or should i just part it out?"

Personally I don't think it is. You could rebuild it and when you are done you will still have a 30 year old motor that parts are becoming harder and harder to find. There are a lot of good (and newer) used motors out there going pretty cheap.

"Totally agree with IBNFISHN on this one.

Every few years Merc goes through some major engineering changes with their motors.

The Biggies in the past 20 years or so were in 1986, 1994 and 2005.

Parts are still very much available for the new series that came out in 1986 and they had superior ignition systems, gears etc compared to their earlier counterparts.

In fact your very model was paired with the 90 horse (sharing a powerhead/ignition/many parts etc) so that it actually began putting out 70 shaft horsepower (and in reality almost 80 because Merc was pretty conservative on their marketed ratings).

Where things kinda sit with Merc's now is - 86 or newer, worth fixin', older than that, worth playing with if you want a project or a hobby but since you can pick up a an 86-on motor cheap, that's the way to go if you don't want to go the cost of "new"."

"Sell them on Ebay. If you do it in the spring, they go for a premium (when guys are thinking fishing)
