"I've got a 79 115 johnson. I had it running fine when I bought it a couple of months ago (in the driveway with water hookup). I re-wired the lights and pulled the purple wire that hooks up to the control box off of its ground in the process (this caused the alarm to sound). Fixed that after taking the control box apart and realizing it wasn't a problem in there.

After reattaching the purple wire to a ground the engine started right up and ran fine, then cut off. Now I can't get it to do anything. I have replaced the ignition switch with a new one, but all that happens is the key turns with no results, no sound, etc.

Battery is fully charged, and fuse in wiring box on transom is not blown

Any ideas?"

"Hey Lee, First thing is to check the starter. short across the solenoid (heavy wire) contacts. this should cause the engine to turn over. If it doesn't Use a voltmeter to make sure you have 12V coming to the solenoid. If you do have 12V, check to make sure the solenoid to starter wire is tight. If it is , the starter isn't working or your ground wire is loose or corroded. If all that is okay, the problem is behind the motor and you willl have to have a wiring diagram to check it.I'm going to wait and see how this check comes out and I'll be watching for your answer....JIM"

"Just a thought, while you were messing with the control box, did you perhaps knock lose or completely unhook the dead man switch?? Take it loose and hook it back up just to make sure."

"How about the fuse, did you check that?

Look at the main wiring harness running on top of the engine just aft of the flywheel. You'll see a red rubber connector joining two wires comming out of the harness. Pull that connector apart and see if that fuse is in tact or if it's blown. Last year my fuse blew when I operated the trim & tilt while the engine was running. The engine kept running, but once I shut it off I had nothing. I never did figure out why it blew the fuse and it hasn't happened since. Now I carry a couple of spare fuses in my dry box just in case.

"Jim,
Checked the solenoid..it's ok. Then I started testing some wires.

Kevin...thanks for you post, unfortunately I didn't see it until after I had already found the fuse you mention...it WAS blown.

However, now every fuse that I replace it with(even tried a 30 amp) blows as soon as I switch the key on.

So 2 questions:

1: Does the length of the fuse matter...the buss fuses I was using were the long style...not short like the one blown.

2. Before I found the fuse (looks just like a connection in the wire harness..makes me feel kinda dumb at this point) Before I found the fuse I was running a wire straight from the battery to the start terminal on the switch and then touching it to other terminals on the switch out of desperation to see if I could get anything to happen. Could I have messed up the switch?"

Ha Ha!!! Figured it out. There was a short in the purple wire that runs from the kill switch to the alarm.

Thanks to all for your help....just needed some advice and thanks for the heads up on the fuse location!
