Hello,
I am inexperienced with outboard motors. I have been working on my 78 Mercury 800 4cylinder, (forget the s/n but it's in the 483199 thru 5582561 group) for quite some time now. Initially this motor had a minor stall in the mid Rpms that gradually got worse to the point it was hard to get on a plane. I cleaned and rebuilt carbs which did not seem to help. I changed fuel lines, rebuilt fuel pump, confirmed decent vacum through fuel delivery, confirmed compression, and checked spark to just shy of .5"
Recently I noticed a significant amount of fuel in the water after my last testing. I checked the timing on the motor with strobe and it appeared to be off a bit. I have had trouble setting it correctly but honestly nothing I change in the timing has had much effect. Somewhere along the line my tachometer quit working as well. Not sure if that is related.
I took the boat out last weekend after getting the timing set to what I think is correct. The boat cranked decently. Had a hard time idling at correct rpm. It would often die when in gear or with a little throttle. A few times I was able to get it moving a bit and twice I actually got on a plane. At that point it runs like a champ all the way to wot. I'm at a loss of what to try next. Please any input/ help would greatly be appreciated.
