'78 Mercury 7.5 Thunderbolt questions

Hi there. Just bought a 14' Traveller with a '78 Mercury 7.5 Thunderbolt. (hold the laughter please). Been sitting a while and when looking at it, I mixed fresh gas and it fired up pretty quickly and sounded good in the water barrel. Got it home, same thing...ran good in the barrel and I adjusted the idle. My wife got it all clean up and we took to the lake. Again it started, but died within 2min and didn't start again. Won't fire up now. Pulled the plugs and they are wet so its getting fuel and spark. BUT. I really didn't clean out the plastic gas "tank" in the boat and just put premix in. Yes, not to smart. Also, the fuel line is old but still pumps fuel pretty well. I know they break down and can cause rubber to pass into the carb. I'm very mechanical (though it doesn't sound like it here)...and now looking to pull the carb to clean out. Also, this morning the knot for the pull started came out, so thats another thing to work on. I found a service manual online that is coming.

Questions.
- Thoughts on not starting again. Water in fuel, crap in carb...other.
- Pulling the carb. I see two nuts holding it and think that is the only way to pull the carb bowl. I see the nut on bottom of bowl but can't get a socket down there.
I'd appreciate some thoughts on this vintage motor.

Thanks,
Lee
