Used starter, growled, turned slow. I took it apart and cleaned everything up.
Then, back together, when I put the +12 to it, for a test, the sparks flew and smoke started out.:D

Took it apart again, didn't SEE any Self inflicted wounds.

Anybody have some Test process' to look for shorts, or show me I put it together wrong.

I have another starter, but the Fiber Brush Plate is destroyed. You got a Fiberglass brush plate?

Clean between the segments of the armature w/a small thin blade slotted screwdriver or box cutter. Spray brake clean on the armature and blow off w/compressed air. Use an ohmmeter to test for continuity between the windings and ground...each should be open or infinity...no continuity. Touch the positive lead to each segment and the negative lead to the case. Lube the bushings w/2 drops of 20 wt. elec. motor oil. Check the heavy starter wires for corrosion. If it spins the engine faster by shorting the solenoid studs then the solenoid contacts are burned...replace it.
