78' johnson 135 hp shifting problems

I have a 135 johnson and on the lake yesterday I lost drive, before this happened it was getting to where it would go to a high rpm before it would hit drive, I tried adjusting that spin nut by the shift linkage on the cable by the motor but found I could only get F or R to work at once, I did have new cables put on last month and this is the 4th time in the water, sorry I guess my question is how do I properly adjust this out? Any suggestions would be great. Thank you.
