78 Evinrude 25 hp, mouse damage!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum! Here's my problem. Last week I pulled off the engine cover of my 25 hp 1978 Evinrude and found a huge mouse nest under it and all of the visible wires were chewed to pieces. I'm not sure if I should haul the boat, a 1972 aluminum 14' Starcraft, to the nearest boat engine mechanic, or if there is some type of wiring kit I could purchase and attempt replacing all the wiring myself. I've had the boat a couple of years and it has only been in the water two or three times. I'm determined to get it in the water this summer. Also, once fixed, how do I keep the mouse out. I've heard dryer sheets work!? Thanks.

Not much to it actually you can get a used harness and mag plate on ebay for cheap then install all the good parts. Max rules should have the diagram?

When I bought my 1985 20hp two years ago it had mouse damage done at some point only had some electrical tape wrapped on it..I removed it and cut out the bad parts and spliced in new wire and also used liquid tape on one that was not as bad.I have used liquid tape about 5 years ago on my RAV4 that a mouse chewed on the wires..Never had a problem on that either.

You need a couple good cats around. Seriously, you can plug the air intake hole with tin foil plus the drier sheet. If the wires are really bad, you might just order new components from CDI Electronics. If it is a tiller motor, then you will have additional repairs and advice above from other techs is very good. Be sure to check the small tube running between upper and lower crank bearings.
