hi guys,,,the boat from the barn isd coming along but I have a water leak
it comes in the square hole in the intermideate housing on the port side it is right under an allen key type plug, I suspect this is for the driveshat and the driveshaft seal is gone,,,if so how had is it to change?
Dan
its a 1978 sunray with a 120hp OMC inline and a 77 sterndrive

in order for the driveshaft seals to cause water entry, first about a pint of gear lube would have to be displaced into the bilge. I would keep looking. A big side view mirror off a truck slid along the floor of the bilge serves me very well.

The outer seal keeps water out of the shaft and bearing bore.
The inner seal keeps gear oil from entering the bilge.

boat square hole.jpgok not sure how well it comes out in the pic but around the white silicone there is a square hole,,,thats where my water is coming in

I see the nipple on the starboard side back there where the drive impeller feeds water to the hose to the thermostat hsg. Then it looks like there's a pipe plug in the symmetrical location port side. Then it looks like that lump in the case continues down and 90 degrees to that brass looking hex plug. - is that what is leaking?
Is that white stuff an attempt to seal it?

It kinda looks like something might have freeze cracked from ice in that water passage. odd though... I don't recall seeing all those optional places to put the water nipple - looks like there are 3 places where the impeller feed could be taken from that casing.

I used to have a 1977 4 cyl intermediate at work at one time - I`ll check on Monday and see if it is still there - I kinda think it got scrapped. I'm just kinda curious if it is set up the same - I don't remember all that plug and passage stuff.

That is where the electric shift cable would go through. '77 OMC's still used electric shift. Yours must have been converted to mechanical shift if the shift wire is not there anymore. You probably have a cable running through the transom somewhere else.
