77 Johnson help

I just got my first boat and it has a 77 140 hp Johnson on it. I can get it to start with the choke on with ether but it will not idle , it does when you turn the choke completely off. I thing a carb cleaning would fix this issue but my biggest question is, is the motor a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. The model is a 140TL77S ... It appears to be a 4 stroke but I can't see anywhere to check the oil level??? I'm very new to boats if it isn't obvious haha... Thanks in advance

It's a 2 stroke. You mix your oil with the gas at a 50:1 ratio.

its a two stroke and hopefully you are mixing oil with the gas....the place to start on all outboards is to check the compression and make sure the spark will jump 7/16 inch..

Thanks, I've searched all over the Internet and couldn't find anything definitive. The fuel cap didn't say anything about mixing the gas and there is no oil tank. Thanks

I know it has spark because it runs fine with the choke on, just won't start on its own or idle... I'll check compression tomorrow

I've got a 140 as well that starts some days and won't start some days....Im thinking power pack failing??
