The outside of spring(nearest outside of cup) slides to outside of cup and up around recoil rope spool. The. Center of spring stays in place as it should. I bought used and has done this ever since I've owned it.

The end of spring has always been outside of cup... Though small slit. Should it be like that?
 
That portion of the spring, if it is still the factory coil shape, shouldn't be able to do that UNLESS the cup is flawed, in which case, replace the cup.

If that coiled portion of the spring has been reworked (heated and recoiled), it may not have been coiled properly. If this is the case, recoiling that portion of the spring may solve the problem.
 
How FAR out of the cup slot is that spring end protruding? Does the end of that spring still have a good small-radius loop on the very end?

What caught my attention is that you stated that the spring "keeps slipping out and up".

How does it go up, unless it's 1) waaaay too far out from the cup, or 2) out too far AND bent in the wrong fashion.

Some pics would be very helpful.
