76 Johnson won't start after running

I have just purchased my first boat which has a Johnson 25 hp 25EL76E motor. When I first took it out on the lake it ran okay. When I turned it off and then fished a little it would not restart. After waiting even longer it then fired right up. But once again after turning it off it would not restart and even after waiting for quite some time it would not restart at all. Also even when it is running it does not seem to want to idle very well. I have zero experience with boat motors so any help would be appreciated.
 
Is this mtr; a electric start mtr;? If so when you shut it down rite after running and re-start while hot [even a recoil] are you chokeing the mtr;? If so DON'T! Just turn the rev's up a little and fire up, chokeing a hot mtr; will flood it. You may want to change the spark plugs [tighten to 16 to 18 foot lbs] my preference in plugs is autolite and add Star Tron to your fuel [follow directions] it may help smooth things out. Does wonders in my boat. Hope this helps.
 
Your motor probably needs a check up! Compression test,spark test,Carb kit new plugs,Points and condenser,While your getting it in great running condition drop the lower unit and replace the impeller for peace of mind to know its pumping cooling water.
You should consider purchasing a OEM Manual for it.Their very explanitory.
