I have a 76 Johnson 35 hp that runs great but, I am not getting water out of the discharge holes in the rear of the midsection. It is more like exhust with steam. I have replaced the water pump, thermostate, removed lower, and placed a hose on the water tube and run water through the motor not running, and it comes out the exhust tube. the compresion on both cylenders is 140. I've checked the exhust plate for cracks along with the head plate. all are good. The only thing I can think of is the gasked is bad between the power head an mid section. I realy don''t want to pull the power head if anyone has any ideas as to what else I can do.

Are you running on muffs or in a barrel?
Test in a barrel, water level 5-10" above the split between gear case and leg.

Thanks Haffiman. but I've already run it on muffs and on the water. This motor dosen't have any bypass passages as the new ones do. the theromastate dosen't even have one. It almost acts as it is air locked. Took the stat out completly and it seams to run fine other than the gas comsumption.

Thanks for info Haffi! Worked on it yesterday and found a airlock problem because of stat. Drilled a small hole (bypass) in stat and worked like a champ. The new stat didn't have one.
