"This will be my 1st time post

"This will be my 1st time post. I have a 70 hp johnson I just bought in Dec. I checked the compression about 3 weeks ago and it was very good, 120-120-120. Motor turned, prop spun normally. Yesterday I noticed that the flywheel and prop are stuck,(Froze) I live in Minn. Could this be a frozen condensation problem? The motor is in an unheated garage. Thanks, Brian"

Brian...is the motor in gear

Brian...is the motor in gear or in nuetral?if in gear put in in nuetral(if you can)and see if motor will turn...it is possible that the lower unit has water in it...its also possible that the motor is just "stiff" from the cold...if the motor will turn in nuetral then see if the prop is still frozen....if it is then i would pull the drain screws and check the lower unit for water...if no oil runs out and you think the lower unit has frozen water in it then i would try to find a a way to heat it with hot water or something and get the frozen water out before a crack occurs in the foot..i have owned one of these motors on the past and they will not turn over easy by hand...good luck

"Thanks for the response Carl,

"Thanks for the response Carl, I went out tonight and put a knipco heater on it. In 10 minutes the prop spun. I opened the drain plug and got about a 1/2 cup of water out of it. The oil was black. I should have checked it but the person I bought it from told me they had changed the lower unit oil, and had found no water or metal shavings in it. I like to trust people. When will I ever learn! Thanks, Brian"

Brian....glad you found the pr

Brian....glad you found the problem....maybe you will get away with just gaskets and seals..there are some things that need to be checked before you do that tho....there are more qualified members in here than me to be specific in gears etc..if you decide to repair it i would look close at the coils and the status of the varnish or laquer or whatever they are coated with.you may want to consider recoating them...the 70 i had got water in a coil and ran on 2 for a fishing trip and ruined the trip..i finally got rid of the whole rig because of a leaky fibre glass boat and no power trim on the motor..my one and only foray into a used motor and boat..i think we all make at least one purchasing mistake in our boating life so dont feel bad..good luck..Carl
