Hi I’m having a control box keeps locking up? If you don’t have the throttle and shifter cable hooked up to the engine the control box shifts perfect forward and reverse but as soon as your hook it up and go forward It will jump a notch And it’s locked and forward control moves back to neutral but still jammed in forward. I replaced the throttle cam put it all back together keeps doing the exact same thing just anyone have any idea? “I would appreciate any help” model #85693D S#J0001381

Fact-------Motor should be running when you shift it.----Or at least your assistant should be turning the propeller if motor is not running.

Hi thanks , I tried when it’s running and it locked up in Forward jammed .wood not go Neutral or reverse but if I take it apart and line up the ball bearing on the the other part that goes to neutral switch it will work. Something is making it jump over a notch where it won’t work correctly?

I thought maybe it was the cable Adjustment so I took the cables off and reset them to wear their lined up perfectly with the restart slot on the side of the carburetor. But it’s still did the same exact thing. This shifter box problem has got me stumped?

Parts # 37 and 95 are worn. Not exactly 100% sure, but I think that might be the year that Evinrude replaced all the controls under warranty. You may or may not have the latest version. Be careful you get the correct parts.

EDT: 44 years can affect memory, but I believe #95 was 778207 and replaced by 0386542

Hi thanks for your quick response!
yes that makes sense to me. Every time I take it apart the ball bearing is in the wrong slot. So I would have to move it over one space for it to line up with the neutral switch. Ok I will replace that and see. Thank you very much for your time! I realize it’s not 100% I would rather replace a couple of parts and keep the original control box. This morning I’m going to take it apart put it back together and try shifting it with the motor running and see If it’s landing in the same spot.

Well today I took the control box apart put it back together fired up the motor for the first time since I Replaced water pump impeller and rebuilt the carburetors. Started up and ran just fine I shifted forward and reverse forward and reverse and my overheat alarm went off so I didn’t quite get to shift all the way forward full throttle to see if it would lock up again. I ended up taking all the thermostat housing and everything apart and cleaning it up and I’m now waiting on gaskets to put that back together and I’ll start over and try again. I was thinking I could put a few pictures up in case anyone else has the same problem but I haven’t figured it out yet.
I have to say it is so nice being able to call one place an order all the parts I need for my engine even if it’s from 76 I wish I would’ve found Marine engine.com along time ago!!

Hi I went ahead and replace those 3 parts starting with t Throttle cam and #37 and # 39 and it seems to be working thanks , also I’m going to take your Advice and not shifted when I’m not in the water.
well I was testing my engine out I realized there’s no water turned around and my son shut the water off! so i ordered a new impeller kit Because I melted that one. I guess it’s my fault for not watching him haha $100 Dollar mistake
17 year’s in the USCG and I’m still Learning. I really appreciate the help and the time you took to help me. Thanks very much!
