75hp mariner canbt shift into reverse

"Just got done with a 3 year restoration and getting ready to go out . changed the impeller and the shift shaft is in the correct position, the motor goes into foward good but won't engage into reverse { it will if I give the shift slide extra pressure} i've adjusted the cable as much as I can and will still go into foward.. very confused???"
 
"Drop lower case, get the gear

"Drop lower case, get the gears into neutral, neutral too on the shifter.

Slide into place taking care not to nudge out of position. Got someone to turn flywheel by HAND to assist driveshaft locating lower case. Make sure water uptake is in correct place too.

Readjust the shifter cable to where she was initially and this will sort it all out...
