It starts easy and idles fine

It starts easy and idles fine but when you give it more gas it starts to knock and run real rough.My mechanic says that the plugs and carb are fine but can;t find the problem. Help!}

"Maybe, you say it knocks - so some moving part is not working like it is supposed to. That coupled with the rough running would lead me to lean towards the valves.

However, I'm a 2 stroke guy and 2 strokes don't have valves, so it's unfamiliar territory..."

My mechanic suggested that the overheat protection which limits RPM may be messing up and causing a cylnder to drop out. Is that how it works?

"It would actually cut the ignition to cylinders 1 and 4 - a timing light would tell you in less than a minute if they didn't have spark.

And yes, the alarm would be going for either an overheat or low oil condition - either of which would cut the ignition in the same manner."
