"i recentlty bought a 85 7.5 mercury .it didnt pee water so i checked the w.p. impeller and it was almost gone!so i installed a new one and still no water out the pee hole.so i went thru it several more times.still no water getting to powerhead.i put the engine upside down and hooked a water hose to the water pipe and also to the flush hole,i found it its leaking in the area where the powerhead mounts. i am now attempting to remove the power head but not much luck.i have a repair manual,it says to remove flywheel, coils, tiller handle and linkage, etc.is it really necessary to remove these parts just to lift off the entire powerhead to check the mounting gasket or area under the powerhead where i seen the leak?i have removed everything that seems to mount the powerhead, but i cant break it loose.i havent put a lot of pressure on it ,i dont want to break anything.please help"

"BJ's correct - you will have to remove the tell-tale hose from the cowl, plus the gas line and any other little item (kill switch maybe) that is physically connected to the lower cowl.

But other than that, just remove the powerhead bolts from underneath and then pull the powerhead "intact". It may seem kinda stuck on, a rocking motion to break the seal may work or alternately, something like a paint scraper will help - just be careful if you do use a tool however, this is just cast aluminum and can be damaged fairly easily..."

It is likely the wee plastic washer at the top of the water tube. On severe overhear it melts and then blocks water flow.Hope you did not spill any water into the exhaust when motor was upside down.

"Jason, cross your fingers and hope it's just the cylinder block cover gasket (merc part 27-41382), sells for about $2.50 at any dealer.
