75 Merc Water in lower unit

I drained the gear lube out o

I drained the gear lube out of my lower unit and there was about an ounce of water that came out first. The oil still looked pretty good ( not milky) I guess the water and oil had separated.There was no O-ring on one of the vent plugs. My question is would this let that much water in the unit.

I think the missing seal on the plug could have been the problem.

Remember that better grades of oil can tolerate quite a bit of water. The less expensive oil will get thick even with a small amount of water in there.

Replace the plug with a new seal and fill the unit with Quicksilver High Performance oil. After running for a few hours, remove the lower plug and see if there is any water present.

" Thanks Guys for your info. I am hoping that it was the missing seal. If not I have found a service shop that will do a pressure test and if needed a seal kit + labor-lube for under $60.

" Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how it ended up. It was the shift shaft oil seal that was leaking, so they removed the gear case installed a new seal, pressure tested and refilled with lube and new vent screw washers was total of $60. Just the one shift shaft seal was $8.65. You were probably right that the whole seal kit would be about $50 just for the seals. Thanks again guys, GREAT WEBSITE!! Steve "
