I owned a 50 hp merc that when changing the waterpump/impeller, you could install the lower end so the remote would be reverse! Is this possible with the johnson as it is propelled foward with the remote in reverse. Do I just change the connecting cables? Lower the unit and realign it? Any help is appreciated

For a short while they made lower units that shifted to forward when shift rod traveled " down " and since then they shift to forward when shift rod pulled " up "--------So I believe you have the wrong lower unit for your year !!!

Thanks for the response, We just bought the boat and were told the lower end had indeed been swapped. Can't we just simply replace the prop to the opposite pitch? Would this have any potential to damage internal gears? We took the boat out and ran it with the remote in reverse. We couldn't get full throttle this way and the cam travel is limited in reverse but the motor didn't seem to have a problem running? Any input on this? Thanks again Bill

So you bought somebody's problem !---Seen all of this before too.-----No you can not put a reverse rotation prop on there either !!------Look it up in the parts diagrams to see what needs to be done.-----------Look it up for a 74 model to see how the shift function can be corrected for your motor.- Any pictures of the starboard side of the block ???-------Model # of the motor you have ???
