75 HP outboard high idle

I have a 75 HP outboard on a houseboat. I think it is a 1990. When I start the motor it immediately runs like it is going full speed. It doesn't matter whether the button is pushed in on the throttle control lever or not. I checked the motor with the cowling open and could not see anything obvious. Do I have a stuck throttle, a bad control lever, or something else?

Has it always done it (or since you have had it)?
No, I took it for a cruise a week ago and it was fine. It was a little hard to start this time and when it did it went to the "high idle" or full throttle condition. I have tried moving the throttle forward and reverse, in and out of gear, and can not see anything obvious.

Check your throttle linkages manually to see if throttle plates in carbs are opened up all the way.
I think they are open. Also, the Quicksilver throttle is stiff to move. Can I lubricate it or adjust them? How would I know if they should be replaced?

I would lube "everything that moves" before I started replacing things.

There is a spring on (behind) the throttle lever that may be getting weak, but a good shot of lube might work wonders.

Also check that your butterflies on the carbs are closing fully - might need some lube on that linkage as well.

Watch everything that "moves" with the hood off (have someone else work the controls) and if it moves, lube it :)
