"I have a '78 75 hp Merc, that when we hook it to a water hose will go in gear (forward and reverse) just fine and putting the throttle to it is fine also. But when we get it in the water and put it in gear (forward ad Reverse) it will just die. What is the problem here? Thanks"

"Jeremy, when it dies "under load" that usually means there is a fuel restriction.

It could be a clog somewhere in the fuel line (anything from a clogged vent at the tank, clog at the tank pick-up, cooties in the line itself or fuel filter, or even air getting into the system).

Other possible causes - clog in the carb(s), a fuel pump diaphram on the way out.

Other possible but less likely causes - bad reeds or a crankcase leak.

All the above is assuming that the compression is good."
