"John, depends what you are looking for.

The serial numbers on Mercs do not equate out to anything. They are simply a production number than contains no information in and of itself.

To determine a year, you require the serial plus the horsepower to compare that to a production list.

I have fairly extensive production lists that I use. This site has a decent set of lists with "starting" serial numbers for US built motors. Mine also include (incomplete) Canadian, Belgian and Austrailian Merc lists.

Some of the casting numbers (part numbers/models) for parts, carbs etc can be looked up on parts listings such as those available at www.mercruiserparts.com

That however is very tedious unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

If you are looking for your model year, you can post your serial and I can look it up for you quite quickly..."

Well I cant determine what part # I need now for the fuel pump diaphram. The serial#s on the mercury site are all higher than mine (a984171) can anyone tell what the correct part# is for the fuel pump diamphram? I'm guessing its 55278a5. Thanks

"Doug, I don't remember if you ever confirmed whether this was a 4 cylinder or 3 cylinder model - that serial could make it either - it was produced in 85 just at the cross over of the models.

If a 3 cylinder, the diaphram kit 42909A4 (12 bucks at merc would be correct).

If a 4 cylinder then part number 21-857005A1 if the fuel pump is square in shape, and the one you note above 55278A5 if it's a triagular fuel pump..."
