75 evinrude 9.9 anode questions....

Hey guys I really appreciate the help on getting my engine running earlier today and now that I have to tattoo a spark plug on myself I was looking on YouTube about Outboards and I came across the issue of anodes sacrificial anodes to be exact I do not have an anode on the cavitation plate on my 75 9.9 but I heard that they're supposed to have a nodes the control electrolysis eating away at the motor

I've heard rumors that in freshwater it doesn't matter or if it's not electric start it doesn't matter but I don't want to take any chances because this motor has lasted so many years and run so good I don't want to damage anything

Does a 1975 Evinrude 9.9 horsepower have a nodes at all and if it does where would they be located because most of them look like they're on the cavitation plate but mine does not and I've heard that some engines have them internally but I have no idea where they would be located and if I need one what would you all recommend for finding and using and mounting and a anode to my motor as I only run in freshwater but I may be taking a couple of trips to Florida so I will be going into salt and I just wanted to save myself the trouble of pitting from electrolysis...

And by the way guys I appreciate all the help that everybody gave me on trying to get my motor to rev out completely I can't believe after all the money and all the parts that I put on it it was a simple spark plug that killed it all so now I have two sets of spares plus a wrench on board at all times + 2 new plugs in the motor but now I'm kind of worried about anodes and though they have to be on the motor or on the boat as it is aluminum or both?

Thanks in advance... Mike Berry

Although I am happy to have all new carburetor plugs coils fuel pump and all that other stuff that I put on to it as I know now it's all in good clean working condition and should service well for the next couple of years at least so I don't have any regrets putting all the work and money and parts into it

There do not appear to be any anodes on this model

By the mid 1980s an anode was fitted o the underside of the AV plate and by the mid 1990s there was a pair in recesses either side of the gearcase above the AV plate

If you see any need you could fit an anode similar to those fitted throughout most of the 1980s to 9.9, and other, models

If you do not see any need it falls into the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category

however in freshwater you need magnesium anodes, if any, because both zinc and aluminum anodes become coated with oxide and rendered ineffective.

Zinc or aluminum anodes can be used in salt water, but only aluminum in brackish water. Magnesium is too reactive for use in brackish or salt water.

For your trip to Florida the best bet will be to simply tilt the engine out of the water, or remove it altogether, when not in use otherwise you could fit a zinc anode to the AV plate as suggested above but remember if it is used in freshwater it will become ineffective, even in salt water unless cleaned to bright metal.

An anode will only be necessary or effective in protecting the transom bracket if permanently immersed.
