'75 evinrude 4hp spark plug

i pulled out the 4hp mid-70's evinrude from our basement where it had sat for 10 years. after some plug cleaning, it ran just fine. as the plugs were showing some carbon buildup, i thought a new set would be in order. the originals were champion L86, the champion book at wal-mart said J8C, which i purchased. on comparison with the original plugs, the new j8c's have a shorter shank. it runs fine. is there a right plug?

I am working on a 4 evinrude now a 1973 the correct spark plug is a champion J6J or a AC M44C.They are shortshank plugs.watch out for the long ones they if the plug is inserted just right can be hit by the piston.
