"The shop manual for my 1974 70 hp 70ES74 engine says to use "sea lube" gear lube, or "DEXRON ATF"! Is this correct?. Should I run ATF in that lower end. Its got a hydraulic shift assist, that likely would love ATF. I need some professional input on this. Thanks so much, Chuck"

use reg lower unit gear lube..

use reg lower unit gear lube...not the thin elect shift stuff.

"every shop i've worked at, incl mine,for the last 32 yrs,..has put reg lower unit oil in them,and they wk fine,.unless,u have a prob to begin with!.the only thing u cant use outboard lower unit oil in,the reg type(hi-vis),is the elect shift,and hydro-elect shift. units.yours,is hydro-mechanical...big diff."
