"After browsing JWB's, Mr. Reeves' and Mr. Ringvold's responses, I saw posts advising that if the black stuff was melting down from under the flywheel then the stator needs to be changed.

While I'm not the original owner, I've had this old 50 horse for 12 years and relative to the electrical system, have only changed the coils (years ago) and it runs great. I recently noticed a stream of black meltdown runs from under the front of the flywheel and a drop or two from the rear. This meltdown has been there since February (2-3 trips ago). The insulation of the harness from under the flywheel going to the powerpack is brittle. This engine is used 6-10 times a year.
I'm using one Stowaway battery to crank and run trollmotor and just learned that this battery will not hold a charge over a week or so.

Again, the 50 doesn't miss a lick, but I'm ready to change the stator (and rectifier) if necessary and would like to fix the condition causing the high heat. Is there a test to check the rectifier? Please comment on the stator and possible causes of the heat and what other electrical parts should be changed. Thanks"

"there are tests to ck the rec

"there are tests to ck the rect/reg...do a search,..plenty of good reading..also,do a search on the stator.....same deal..
