"Hey, i have a 74 evinrude 50

"Hey, i have a 74 evinrude 50 horsepower outboard. When you flip up the choke. (I am not sure what they are called)the covers only open about 45 degrees. It will not start this way. When you remove the cover and fully open the choke manually, it starts, but you must hold this down until you remove your hand and it stays. Is this some type of warm up devise? Any suggestions. The motor runs, idles, and performs great once it has ran for a few minutes."

"If it is still as originally

"If it is still as originally equipped it has a " thermo electric choke ". It works as follows. Engine cold, choke manual lever in the automatic position and key " on " you will see the choke solenoid partially CLOSE the choke plates. When you operate the choke switch they should CLOSE fully. When motor starts the choke plates should be partially CLOSED untill the motor warms up and the choke plates OPEN fully. Is your motor still original ? is it warming up, as in does it have a thermostat??"

I am not sure about the thermo

I am not sure about the thermostat situation. It will only start with the choke plates open fully. I am not sure what this means?
