'74 50 horse evinrude - won't accelerate

The motor will idle good, and will rev up, but when I shift into gear it bogs down. Is this just a problem with my carbs needing cleaned, or is this something else? I just cleaned my carbs about 3 weeks ago, and the boat ran good for a while, but now it just won't accelerate and plain out. I've been working on it for a while, but I'm not very experiened with boat motors.

How do I check the compression? I have never gotten into that before.

Ok, thanks. I am running 50:1 mix.
I have thought that it might be a gearbox problem also. If I drain the oil, and don't see any metal shavings should the gears be good?
