The 17 year rest doesn't seem fatal now.
It started easily after the carb rebuild.
Get ready for the onslaught of new questions.
Just dropped lower unit. Will change pump assy, and fluid and seals.
Boat test?
If weather holds here in CT I will be water skiing instead of downhill this December!

"Do not turn that shift rod while the lower unit is off as the measurement is quite critical. Check it (as follows) before reinstalling the unit to the engine.

1973 - 1974 - 65, 70hp (S) 16-11/32 - - (L) 21-11/32 plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral."

"Mine is a long shaft. What is the 21-11/32" measurement? From where to where? If adjustment is off how would one adjust it?
It seemed fine before removal, but who knows?

From the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift hole in the rod. The rod screws into the shift setup in the lower unit and adjusts simply by turning it.

Strange..... It appears that the critical adjustment pertains only to the 50 and 65 horsepower models as the higher horsepower models incorporates a different setup.
