73 thunderbolt 650 kill switch wiring

I'm trying to wire an add on kill switch to a 1973 thunderbolt 650. The original owner had it wired to either short or open the brown (tach wire) on the switch box. I've since learned this does nothing. I'm sure I could wire it to open the white/black trace wire coming from the distributer but my reluctance to try this is a fear of frying the $400.00 switch box. I'm hoping someone has previously encountered my present challenge and can offer a solution. Thanks! boat swx box (800x450).jpg

I used the post where the mercury tilt switch connects to the switchbox for a kill switch, which is the white/black on your switchbox.

Thank you for your reply. A question for clarification. The previous owner had the brown wire(tach) go to ground when lanyard was removed from kill switch. I don't have a tach and don't plan on getting one. If I remove the brown wire from switch box and move it to the white wire/black tracer (from distributer), will grounding the white/black wire kill the engine without switchbox damage or should I create an open circuit between the switchbox and white/black to stop the engine with kill switch?

I wouldn't mess with that brown wire--those boxes are rare and expensive! Use the correct terminal.

Thanks for the help. I looked at a schematic. Showed the tilt switch wiring. Very simple. Stacked brown wire on white/black wire on switch box. Kill switch grounds circuit and Kills engine. Problem solved. Thanks again

The brown wire does nothing but carry the signal to the tach gauge. It will only work from the brown terminal with the old style Mercury tachs specific for Mercs. The modern tach,Faria,Teleflex etc with the adjustable pole on the back, the brown wire needs to be on the rectifier, one of the yellow wires out of the stator. But as you aren't fitting a tach:D:D
