Hey guys new to the board and hoping to get alittle help bought a 73 johnson 9.5 from a guy came in 4 boxes lol (I know sucker for punishment) anyway got it all back together followed the manual for the year and model new gaskets and compression is around the high 80s in both.my problem is that is tough to pull over unless I squirt mix in the cylinders. Then it coughs once and will not run.blows white smoke with every pull after I have cleaned the carb 2 times now.when I prime it seems to hold the stiffness. Going to rebuild the fuel pump tommorow if my kit comes in.Any suggestions would be great thanks

Have you done a spark gap jump test? Not with a spark plug, with a tester? You need 7/16-1/2" gap jump, but remember on that older model motor you'll need to pull that recoil cord like a madman.

Have you checked the Points gap to see if it is set properly?

Do you have the correct spark plugs installed?

Do these things and report back.

I've got a 1966 9.5 - runs like a scalded dog. :) These are good motors.

Hey guys thanks for the info spark is bright blue and jump a pretty good 1/2 inch. Gap on points are set at .020 plugs are gapped at .30. I got my gasket set for the fuel pump today so gonna build that and check my float again see if it opening enough noticed even if I turn the low speed all the way out I still can't smell a lot of fuel thanks again

I just checked spark plugs and they are the wrong ones don't match the part number on the website I put in j8c not j4c maybe be a big part of the problem thanks again guys

What's that about "hard to pull over"? Should not be hard to pull except for the compression strokes. In fact, that geared starter should make it fairly easy to pull. If it is hard to pull with the spark plugs out, perhaps you found out why the previous owner tore it apart.

Easier to pull over when the plugs are out. The motor came with to blocks one new and the old one. Came with new rings all I had to get was gaskets. I will have to check the engine sync tonite when I get home. I know when I turn the throttle the butterfly goes wide open

Ok guys new problem other the she runs now must have been the fuel pump. Now that it runs it is a lot easyer to pull over. My problem is now it won't idle and I have to start it with my hand on the throttle. Also if I remove the fuel line it idles I am stumped again thanks in advance

Yes replaced fuel lines and cleaned and rebuilt carb blew to cans of carb cleaner through and compressed air I just put the float in and never adjusted it so maybe that's the problem.it was a new float woth the old needle I will take it apart and adjust then
Thanks

thanks for the help I did a full rebuild on the carb blew 2 cans of cleaner through aswell as compressed air.Ilooked at the sync and I cant seem to turn the armature plate far enough to line up the marks when the the throttle is all the way closed I can look in the carb and see the butterfly just open abit

Hey guys wanna thank every one for the help got it to idle and it runs great.there is a nob on the side of the tiller handle that I thought was a lock for the tiller but It is to set the idle thanks again
