73 JOHNSON 65 hp PROBLEMS - FIRST EVER!!

We have a 73 Johnson 65hp outboard, and the other day we went across the lake to help a neighbor, forgot a tool, came home, went to go back to the neighbors and the motor wouldn't start. it does this: Ruhr.....ruhr......ruhr....

So...we repaced the battery, and since we had an old nasty metal gas tank we bought the new VENT FREE plastic one with the quik-connect hose, primed it up, and it started.

left it a few days and went down to start it and .....ruhr.....ruhr.......ruhr....finally the enginie starts turning but only if I have the key turned.....it won't catch on it's own. I do notice a gas slick on the water. did i overprime and it's flooded? or does this sounf eerily like a starter problem?

If it is a Bosch starter they are easy to take apart for inspection and repair.-----May just need new brushes.----I install those all the time at $5.00 a set.----------The other starter used on those is also relatively easy to inspect / repair.

First, is the starter the cylindrical (can of soda) shaped item on the top of the motor with the mini-sprocket on the top of it...or do u have a link to a pic?

Secondly, is this something we can send out to you to fix or what do we do??

They are very easy to repair at home , do not be afraid to try it.---The starter is round and black !

Hey, I'll fix anything I can, but first i need to know what exactly the fix is! Do I dis-assemble it and clean it? Do I rplace an internal part? if so what part and where can I get it? Can we be specific as to what the repair consisits of.

ALSO, would a photo of the starter help you ascertain which one it is and therefore what repair mahy be necessary?

Lol, I was readeing your name as Racerone, as in Ricerone, the san francisco treat...I just got it racer One! Clever, I like it!

You can test the starter with a set of jumper cables clip the ground on a good engine ground and the neg terminal on the battery then connect the pos to the post on the starter and touch the other end to pos on the battery. If it spins good you have wiring issues if it dont the starter needs rebuilt or replaced. Any auto electric shop can rebuild it for you for reasonable or you can attempt it by yourself. Be sure and disconnect the battery before turning a wrench.

a decent suggestion, to be sure, but we have no other "good" engines near - not even a car engine. small, private lake, everyone else had small rope pull motors and nobody i'd feel comfy asking anyway. But it's a great suggestion that I'd definitely do if possible.
