72 OMC Remote Controls

I've got a 72 50 hp Evinrude with a yellow plug remote unit. Can a black plug remote unit be modified to work on this engine? The black plug unit will crank it over and run the choke, but won't let it spark. If I have to install a separate kill switch inline somewhere that's ok with me, but I need to know if the black plug remote will shift the electric gear case.

The internal wiring is different, hence the color code. The only way you can safely intermix the two is to painstakenly match the wires between the two plugs... continuity tests, cut, join, solder, heat shrink, much cussing!

Nope, I've done enough of that getting the boat this far. I've got the original Evinrude push button remote, I'll use that for now until I find another yellow plug Johnson single lever unit. Just out of curiosity, what year motors used the black plug remotes?
