"I just replaced a lower unit

"I just replaced a lower unit on my motor and also put new water impeller on it. With it together started and ran it in tank for awhile to see how it was pumping and what temp the motor got to. Ran at about 1300 rpm's for 5 min, saw very little flow out of exhaust ports when I first started. When the temp reached about 140 more water started to come out of it. I was wondering if this is normal and if it has a thermostat and if it does where is it? My book does not talk about it, or at least I cannot find it. What temp should this motor operate at when using in lake?"

"140 degrees sound about right

"140 degrees sound about right. as far as the location of the thermostat its on the head but down below the lower spark plug. but to get to it you need to remove the whole water passage cover(also called cylinder head cover). and if you do there is a pressure relief valve to deal with, its just difficult to get back together in such a tight area, but it can be done. now if you have the original controls there is a "hot horn" under the cover of the control box(sift and throttle box) that is activated by a temp swicth that is located in the upper port side of that water passage cover. to test the horn just ground the brown wire with the key on and motor off and you should hear it. if you end up replacing the t-stat test the thermoswitch while your in there by submerging it in oil and heating the oil up to about 210 degrees at that point he switch should close, then reopen at 175 degrees. after checking all of that you will feel better about taking the boat out if there is not much water pumping out the exhuast holes
good luck"
