71 Johnson steering question

Please don't mind the wrong terminology for the parts, I'm a 911 dispatcher not a mechanic.;)

I am brand new to the boating world and was able to pick up a 72 Larson 16 foot Tri-hull, and a 71 Johnson 50hp outboard. The issue I am finding is that the connection for the steering is no what I expected with the outboard. Where the cable from the boat goes through the transom bracket there are 2 bolts on either side.
Do I just take the bolts out and place the steering cable through there? Not sure if that is even for the steering with this old of model.

I was also thinking of just connecting the steering to the part that comes out from the bracket with 2 bolt holes in it.

Thank you for all your help!!

If I am reading this correctly, yes you have to use the transom mount kit for this motor, which does not have tilt-tube steering. A ball joint completes the connection to the steering arm.

Ok that makes sense because the steering cable from the boat has the ball joint receiver on it. So, would I connect the ball joint bolt to the steering arm? Where would you recommend on finding a ball joint? I checked a local marine shop and they did not have anything, same with the local hardware stores i've checked on.
