hey guys. got a problem, fried my impellors when i left the water inlet closed from last winter. boat is a 71 penn yan, raw water cooling

rebuilt the D65 pump with new impellors, put it in the water and it got hot idling. pulled the pump apart and toasted one impellor. so i replaced it, lubed it, primed the system with the hose and tried again. its still getting warm.

current setup is routed something like this
inlet to strainer to raw water pump
pump to front of block housing then up to the intake
out the termostat housing then splits,

water exits manifolds into tranny cooler then goes back to the pump to the second impellor
out the pump into the front of the manifolds to go out the boat.

somethings wrong, either i have impellor peices plugging something or head gasket is throwing exhaust into the cooling system.

i tried running water through all the hoses and most seemed ok. problem seems to be getting water back to the pump to the second impellor

im really getting fusterated. any ideas on how i should go about narrowing things down?

Best guess? The pump is not oriented correctly. Check out my (crappy) sketch and see if your pump is installed the right way. The sketch is for a single impeller pump, but the theory is the same.

Jeff

Note: If your boat has a single engine, choose RH or LH drive from the sketch.

wow, you know what that may be it. the pump was labeled though in/out i'll have to take a better look at it.

my pump is CC rotation i have the ports of the pump to the right side right now.
