"i bought a 1971 20hp with no fire to the plugs. i found why and pulled of the flywheel and rewired the whole engine, put it back together. now im not sure if i have the timing right, or even if i should have to worry about timing. there is a white timing mark on the flywheel and a set of marks on the cover im assuming is a timing guide, but thats all i know"

"and by the way, i do have fire to the plugs now and the engine is running, however i have not run it long enough to hear whether or not the ignition is timed right."

"2cyl engine top cyl is no#1.

"2cyl engine top cyl is no#1. to get it to top dead centre take out no#1 plug and feel with screwdriver into hole onto piston rotate engine by hand to see if screwdriver goes down with piston or comes up. when piston is at its top most position check the timing mark on flywheel is inline with the marks on the cover. if its inline thatis ok if it is out you may need to remove the flywheel and position it via the allocated bolt holes till it lines up. once that is in order you can then adjust timing of engine with timing light. timing should be between 3-5 degrees BTDC at idle in forwards gear. max timing on this model, i am not exactly sure but i think about 25-27degrees BTDC Can anyone else help with exact timing? I have a repair manual for this model i can check and get back to you later. good luck"

actually i just got back from

actually i just got back from riding around on the lake a few minutes ago and the motor performed like a champ. we do a lot of duck hunting on the savannah river and our little 9.8 brought us back up the river at about 8 mph. hopefully we can get at least 15 with the 20!

quite a motor for only $250!

thanks for the help
