70hp johnson lower end

JRHAYS

New member
I just got a pontoon with a 1979 johnson 70 hp el motor.i changed the gear oil in the lower end,and not really familiar with boat motors i removed the screw in the middle of the 2 plugs thinking that had something to do with filling the gear case.i since learned that screw holds the shaft bearing in place.as soon as i took it out and realized i shouldn't have i reinstalled it witout anything being moved or jarred,i didn't hear any noise like a bearing falling or anything.i am hoping that bearing is a tight enough fit on the shaft that without being run the bearing stayed in place.would like opinions on this problem and suggestions on what to do.

That screw is just a keeper to keep the lower d/s bearing from working up the shaft when running. Make sure it's sealed good. You should have no probs.
