70hp evinrude water pump replacement question

I am replacing the water pump on my 88 70hp evinrude. When I pulled the pump, I noticed there was no o-ring between the impeller and the bottom plate. Does it require ? My kit came with an extra oring.

If the impeller has a groove in it to accept the O Ring, then yes, it should have the O Ring. If no groove, then no O Ring.

The 1988 70hp parts book does not show a impeller O Ring, but of course the book can't include all the upgrades and I really don't recall (having retired back in 1991) if the 70hp upgraded to a impeller O Ring setup or not.

Those kits include items that may or may not be used in various pumps/engines (universal kits).
