Hi There I just brought an old 1986 150 Yamaha, it didn't come with a control box, but I can get my hands on a new 703 control box that was meant for a 2005 model 9.9. So I was wondering if it is all compatible. Are all Yamaha boxes compatible with all yamahas?
cheers hope someone can help.

No, they are not all compatible.
The wiring harnesses may have some differences. Not sure about the specifics of that, don’t have detailed knowledge of the pin-outs so will leave that part to an expert. But I can tell you of one major difference from personal experience most definitively, that is the throttle lever. Some 703 boxes are push-to-open, some are pull-to-open. In other words the throttle level pulls onthe throttle cable or pushes on the throttle cable to match the linkage on the engine that opens/closes the carburetors, they are not all the same. If ordering a 703 you can order it either way. If no choice or already have one you can switch the lever around the other way inside the control box but it is quite a bit of work. Google it andyou will find articles how to do this. The other easier alternative, which I took after ignorantly ending up with the wrong 703 off of ebay, is to buy just the part, the lever that is built the other way around, and replace it inside the 703 box. This was more than sufficient for my limited mechanical abilities, but it worked out fine. Then you can sell your old lever to some unsuspecting fool that bought the other wrong-way-‘round. I kept mine, and ended up using it on a future Yamaha that was back the other way again. Best regards, tom
