"Motor has been working good for five years. Then would cut out at WOT but idle fine. After a minute at idle, good at WOT for a 100 yards then cut out. Finally figured out it was a restricted fule line due to check valve failure in primer bulb. By then motor had run lean and melted pistons. Moral: if running bad, don't horse it.

Question: How do I tell what year the power head is? Leg says 1987 but repair shop says power head is 1978. Outsides look the same as a 1989 they wanted to sell me. All I can find out is that the thermostat is the plastic kind while the 1978 version looks like one from a car. How do you tell what you have and is there really any difference?"

The 89 has the fine spline and will not fit on the 87 lower unit. So what gives here, who is right and who is wrong.Perhaps you should visit another shop or ask your mechanic if he is aware of what fits what."

"Thanks, NAS. The motor is being rebuilt so it will be up and running soon regardless of the year. Sounds like it is probably close to 1987 since the lower unit tag says 1987. I would have learned a lot if I had tried the rebuild myself but I was afraid one of the lessons would be "don't try this at home.""
