70 hp Mercury

I just bought a mercury 70 hp motor #48288159, can someone help find the year of this motor. And what lower unit will fit it? Thanks
 
That is a 1978 number and most lower units from the early '70's to the early '80's will fit from 60HP to 90HP and possibly higher HP.The gear ratio may differ but a different size prop will compensate for this.I have a '84 75HP lower unit on my beautiful '69 Merc800,couldn't find one from the same era.But as long as the shaft is the same length and the bolt pattern is the same, it should bolt right up.Some of the lower units will have a spring loaded pin on top of the drive shaft,the lower unit will still fit if the shaft is the same length and bolt pattern the same.
 
I think the 3 cylinder motor mentioned ( 1978 ) uses the same lower unit as the 2 cylinder 35 /40 ------ 4 cylinder 50 ------ 3 cylinder 65 ------And nothing from any bigger motors.
 
Racerone is correct,I was thinking 4cyls,as I have used a 4cyl 650/65HP lower unit from the mid '70's before I got the 75HP lower unit from Canada.The part numbers differ,but she bolted right up. Cost more to ship it than buy it.But let there be no panic,from reading this forum and others, there should be plenty of those lower units floating about.
