70 hp Johnson VRO ISSUES

Hello all I have a 1990 sunbird with a 70hp VRO it will start and idle but when I take off at 3000 rpm it begins to shudder! Sometimes it comes out of it when I shut it off and restart it! It is coming out of it less often now and I am a novice and don't know where to begin! Any help is appreciated!!!

Shudder sorta violently?
If so, might be SLOW mode, triggered when the motor overheats.

Run it with the cowl off, and when it starts shuddering, place hand on engine head, and see if it is too hot.
Careful!!!

If you can hold your hand there for a count of 4 to 6, it is NOT too hot.

Or use a digital laser temp gun to measure the temp of the head.

Agree with the above. Check the engine temp.
