I have a 1978 70 hp Johnson 70
I have a 1978 70 hp Johnson 70ELD8C s/n4939326 I am new to the boat motor world so need all the help i can get.I bought this motor for a winter project for my boat. I put the motor on the boat and put the boat in the water on the trailer and started motor. Started and idled fine. Used the high speed ldle lever on the controls and allowd motor to run about 5 min. pushed high speed idle controler back and motor idled fine. I then pushed throttle control fwd and prop engaged and all worked well. pulled throttle back to netrual rpm down motor idled fine. pushed throttle into reverse and it started grinding gears pushed throttle back more and motor RPM went up and gear grinding was worse. This motor has a manual shift. I disconnected the shift linkage and tried to push shifter into reverse. The shifter kicked back real hard! So i put my foot against the shifter and pushed it kicked back hard then went into reverse but killed the motor at an idle. I can move the shifter into fwd and it goes into gear with no problem and motor idles fine. How much force should it take to put the motor into reverse? Could the lower unit have a problem? Thanks for any and all help!
