70 Horse Johnson 1989/1990

I had a tiller handle put on my 70 Johnson about 2 years ago. It had a steering wheel before that. Ever since, I've had an issue. When I start the boat, it idles great on the trailer. When I launch boat and get in the river, it runs like a champ. However, when I slow down to motor through timber, etc, the motor will die. Then when I go to crank it back up, it takes about 10 seconds to finally catch and fire back up. Then it will run a little bit, and do the same thing again. It will continue to do that until I get back in river then it will run like a champ again. It seems it only happens when I am going at the lowest speed it will go. I ran the river yesterday and it ran great in the river, but when I was loading it on trailer, it died (it was in gear but throttle was all the way off). I had a tech put a new fuel pump on the motor but that obviously wasn't it. I've run SeaFoam through it and it didn't help. Please advise and thanks in advance!! Chris

What happens if you pump the fuel primer bulb constantly? Any difference? It sounds like you're running low on fuel at a low rpm.

Thanks for replying! I tried pumping the bulb when in gear at lowest speed and it didn't make a difference. It runs great except when barely moving. Does the same in reverse too. I was in some cypress trees last weekend and I bet I started it 6 times getting out because it kept dying. It also delays a little now taking off when I increase the throttle. Once I get to moving a little, it runs great. I totally agree that it sounds like a fuel issue but what would you recommend for my next step please? Thanks!

You need a tiny tach or similiar you need to find your idle speed in gear. You can try turning your idle speed up do it a little at a time use the idle screw on the side of the motor.
