"70 115 hp choke/starting

Hi all, I have a 1970 115 that is a bugger to start. When you take the cover off it has a manual choke lever on the front left. down is choke, middle is automatic, up is no choke. It has a solenoid on the right side that looks like it is supposed to connect to the lever with an armature. The armature is missing so I have just started manually but it sure takes some cranking! I have replaced the fuel pump since it looked like it had a cracked seal. The ball pumps and is tight. Bunch of questions; does the armature do anything other than set the choke? Should I pump the ball more after it gets tight? What should I set the throttle at when starting? Once started should I run it with the choke in the middle location or all the way at the high (no choke) location? Once it starts and warms a bit it runs beautifully with no missing and no smoke and is otherwise perfect (running it in the middle position) Oh, I checked what appears to be a vacum hose behind and below the fuel pump and it appears to be solid. It seems like it is just taking forever to get gas into the carbs.... Thanks so much for any information!

Most likely you are barking up the wrong tree with your suspicion that gas is not getting to the carbs. But easy enough to tell, just remove one of the hex drain plugs from the bottom/side of the bowl. If gas runs out, it was in there.

Pump bulb till firm, set throttle to start position, choke it and crank it. Then move choke to automatic position, or choke off position--whichever works best for you. OR fix the electric choke.

Start position: Depends, is it a Johnson or Evinrude? Johnson, move the red lever down as far as you can but still able to run the starter. Evinrude, neutral button and move the throttle lever forward till you feel a detent "bump". Either one assumes the cable and link & sync is correctly adjusted.
