7.5 fleetwin starter and noise

i have a 54 fleetwin 7.5 model 7514. i have 2 problems with it. the first is the starter rope keeps coming out, i have tried every knot i can think of and it keeps coming off the recoil. my second problem is i have a rattle when i run it with the cowl on and i cant figure out what it is. i have put rubber and bumpers and everything else i could think of but still have the rattle. i know its the cowl because when i run it with out it it is smooth as silk. small problems but would like to get it fixed.

The knot should be a figure eight (8) knot..... Nylon rope..... Burn the knot somewhat so that it fuses together and cannot come undone.

The rattling cowl.... sorry, you're on your own there.
