What is the proper operating temp of the 7.4 GM engine under load? Thanks in advance.

With all systems up to par and working properly, my FWC 1992's run a very very rock steady 160

I run at 160 low RPM and about 165 at 3200 RPM. 89' 7.4s

My 1981 FWC 454's run 175° to 180° depending on the bay water temp.

160/170 Degrees is optimum. Anything lower decreases efficiency and could confuse your ECM/Computer into thinking your engine is just starting. This in turn will cause it to run rich. These modern fuels, ethanol blend, are designed to be used at 220 Degrees but that is not possible in the marine use. Al W.

My 1978 454 is running around 160 at 1800 and 180 at 3200. That is with Chesapeake Bay Temps in the high 80s.

Mine ((454XLi) consistently run at 175 prt, 180 stb no matter what RPM or outside water temp. I run in the Chesapeake Bay.

My 89 FWC 454s also run at about 170. RWC engines have a 140* thermostat and therefore run much cooler than their closed cooling cousins.
